Proposal: A copy of Howard Dean's book on the desk of every DNC Member
Wed Nov 24, 2004 at 10:05:33 AM PDT

Have you read Howard Dean's book,
You Have The Power? It's a manifesto on the changes he'd implement if he were in charge. Of course he was talking about the presidency, but you can see how it would easily translate to his steering of the Democratic party if he was DNC chair. I think the book shows what a competent, resourceful, and moderate leader he has been, and will continue to be.
Let's send a copy of the book to those responsible for appointing a new DNC chair! How awesome would it look if we could get a copy of the book on the desks of every DNC member? Or at least every Executive Committee member and Chairperson.
The book costs $17.67 after shipping, so if just over 225 people donate $5 or $10 each, we could send 100 books out!
FAQ and donation link below the cut.
Update [2004-11-24 15:1:22 by joe]: I removed the donation link, until we can come up with a donation scheme that doesn't involve people giving money directly to a stranger, which understandably makes some people uncomfortable. Until then, think of this diary as a Request for Comments.
Sample letter to the editor, re: missing explosives
Mon Oct 25, 2004 at 10:09:52 AM PDT
Dear Sir:
I'm writing in regards to the story about the missing explosives in Iraq. Just 12 ounces of this type of this RDX explosive was used to bring down Pan Am Flight 103. Thanks to the lack of foresight by the Iraq war's planners, terrorists now have enough explosives to duplicate that bombing hundreds of times over. For years to come, as we look on in horror at future bus bombings in Jerusalem and police recruiting offices in Baghdad, we will know where the materials for these horrific acts originated.
The Bush administration believed there were going to be stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons in Iraq, and the whole point of going into Iraq was to prevent weapons from falling into the wrong hands. When troops got into Iraq, they were not instructed to guard the weapons. This is further proof that the Bush administration's plan for Iraq was failed in all accounts. His strength on security was Bush's last leg to stand on for winning the election. But with this new story, he has nothing left to hold up his reelection bid, and he faces a long crawl back to Craword, TX after November 2.
Thought experiment
Wed Sep 29, 2004 at 01:34:45 PM PDT
Let's do a thought experiment: It's November 3 and Bush has just won the election. What's going through your mind? Personally, I'm feeling remorse, thinking to myself, "I wish I could have just donated $10 more bucks, or volunteered for one more afternoon registring voters."
What's it worth to you that Bush isn't elected? Can you put a value on it?
Donate whatever you can to the Kerry campaign. Even $5 helps.
Volunteer with ACT to register voters. Even just 1 afternoon!
Print out a kerry sign and put it in your window.
Write a letter to your local newspaper. Find their conact info here. Need some talking points? There are some about Iraq below the cut.
If Bush wins in November, that sucks. But don't wake up on November 3rd wishing you could go back in time and do something about it. Do something about it NOW!
Science Friday - Sample of the Sun
Fri Aug 20, 2004 at 09:41:49 AM PDT

The Genesis mission sent a small satellite to capture the hottest payload I can think of: a sample of the sun.
The goal of the project is to learn about what everything in our solar system came from. Since the sun comprises 99 percent of the matter in the system, researchers decided they would like some direct samples of what the star is made of.
Good thing it wasn't made of wax.
Science Friday - Ammonia on Mars could mean life
Fri Jul 16, 2004 at 09:15:50 AM PDT

I guess the martians liked to keep their planet clean.
Ammonia may have been found in Mars' atmosphere which some scientists say could indicate life on the Red Planet.
Researchers say its spectral signature has been tentatively detected by sensors on board the European Space Agency's orbiting Mars Express craft.
Ammonia survives for only a short time in the Martian atmosphere so it must be getting constantly replenished.
There are two possible sources: either active volcanoes, none of which have been found yet on Mars, or microbes.
Does anyone know how to make the indented text in the cool grey/yellow box? Thanks, Kossacks!
Science Friday - German spam
Fri Jun 11, 2004 at 06:02:49 PM PDT
Since nobody else around here seems to care about science any more :)
Been getting any German spam recently? Some co-workers have been joking about the influx of German language spam in the past few days, but as it turns out, it's no joking matter. The contents of the spam are actually nationalistic messages "bemoaning the presence of Turks and other foreigners in Germany." According to the WaPo
Several of the German-language e-mail messages appear to be news articles reporting on purported scandals or crimes involving German citizens of Turkish origin. Several of the messages blast the German press for under-reporting stories of Turkish violence against German citizens.
