Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
-Albert Einstein
Throughout the 90's the Democratic Party, led by the DLC, ran candidates that styled themselves as "Republican lite", the notion being that the public had shifted to the right politically, so therefore the only way to win was to do the same. That assumption proved false. Using that approach, Democrats lost ground continuously throughout the 90's. Even Bill Clinton can't claim to have won a majority of the votes in either of his elections.

I've been reading diaries like crazy this primary season. I've actually been a registered user for years now, but I never paid much attention to anything but the front page and I never commented or created diaries. I made my first one just a couple of weeks ago. It's been with a strange mixture of dread and excitement that I have inserted myself more deliberately in this community. Anyway, all that said, I have an idea that might have the potential to help begin the much needed reconciliation that I really believe we as progressives and Democrats are hoping for.
It mattered who won in ‘68; it matters today

It's always interesting to get a larger perspective on where we are. Sometimes it's uncanny how we tend to find ourselves, as a nation or a community or even just an individual, again and again in essentially the same place. The long view can be a blessing when trying to avoid repeating mistakes.
