Sinclair's revenues

Mon Oct 11, 2004 at 11:05:46 PM PDT

Sinclair's business model seems to rely on staying under the radar of regulators due to its reliance on  outsource-like arrangements with other stations which allows them to control the assets of networks without owning them outright. Ironically, its top line growth in 2004 will be driven by political ads because it has so many stations in swing states. But it also relies on holiday ads coming up. Although they claimed that their revenue miss came from the hurricanes, it looks like drops in the auto sector were weakening them anyway. They are exposed in auto.
Information coming quickly but below is a quick and dirty snapshot of the revenue stream.

Tue Aug 31, 2004 at 10:55:19 PM PDT

While the press has been diverted by Swift Boats and the Republican convention, the biggest player in the pharmaceutical industry has been engaged in a bait and switch to terminate its highly touted discount card and dump 536,000 unprepared seniors on the Bush prescription drug quagmire.
Pfizer announced late Tuesday, August 31, (NYT) that it was ending its highly touted discount drug card for seniors. Some seniors may be unable to change cards until January under the complex rules of the Bush program.

New Paradigm

Sun Jun 13, 2004 at 09:05:08 PM PDT

The evidence suggests that the Bushies have realigned the politics of war: They are pro war (and its private contractors), yet anti military. Contractors now includes not only makers of weapons systems, but subs who hire personnel that perform functions of the sworn personnel on an unprecedented scale which includes core functions of the military. The armed services are treated as traditional workers and 'realigned' to the corporate model - to outsource labor to contractors whose hires must sign agreements that they are not employees and therefore have no standing to make a claim for pension and health benefits (not to mention disability). The contractors have been granted immunity by Bremer by executive order, while sworn personnel are exposed to court martial.
The implications of this realignment are many, but in the short political run could (should) result in a legitimate pro military, yet anti war position for many folks who have not worked with the military in the past.
At another level this poses a threat to the traditional governmental monopoly on the use of force, and a threat to U.S. security since for profit companies could or will own strategic information. These issues have not been discussed much in the U.S. but have been discussed in the European press, and it appears that the Iraqis get it as well.

Guardian on Allawi

Fri May 28, 2004 at 08:53:21 PM PDT

It appears that the winning candidate has links to the scandal about false intelligence which resulted in the suicide of David Kelley and a shakeup at the BBC:
A British-educated neurosurgeon who spent 30 years in exile in Britain, and who has close links with both the CIA and MI6, was named as Iraq's new interim prime minister last night.

Ayad Allawi, 58, the head of the Iraqi National Accord (INA), emerged as Iraq's surprise new leader after weeks of speculation and intrigue.

Earlier this year the INA said it had provided "in good faith" the raw intelligence from a single source that was used to support the claim that Saddam Hussein was able to deploy weapons of mass destruction within 45 minutes of the order.

The INA said later it had presumed that MI6 would verify the claim.
